Google me, baby!
Have you ever gone onto Google and initiated a search using your name while wondering what sort of interesting information you’d find about yourself? Only to discover that a total of 23 women and the odd man, happen to share the same name as you, but even better, you realise that a maximum of TWO results are of em, you!
Have you ever gone onto Google and initiated a search using your name while wondering what sort of interesting information you’d find about yourself? Only to discover that a total of 23 women and the odd man, happen to share the same name as you? But, even better, you realise that a maximum of TWO results are of umm… You! The first is a blog you had written back in grade nine for life orientation and the second, your facebook account! Now to some, this would never happen because you were involved in everything and anything while others merely kept on dreaming. To my dreamers, all things are possible, if you take the first step.
My younger brother once jokingly said that he has dreams; it’s just that he can’t afford them! Before this thought stops you in your tracks, recall the old Chinese proverb that says: A journey of a thousand miles begins with the first step. Most of us are still quite young (and broke) and consequently cannot afford the funding needed for a big business venture or buying shares of a company. But within our generation of young adults, there exists a pride about our creativity and our initiative. So sing until you’re in need of lung surgery, sell perfume until you know all the ingredients on the bottle – do whatever it takes to earn a little something to save or use as capital. Even if it’s not about money, keep thinking until you’ve come up with that killer concept, that brand name, or that business idea that will get you moving in the right direction.
Keep motivated. It’s one thing to have ideas on paper, but another to take the necessary steps to make them a reality. Don’t give up. Pay attention to your instinct, and don’t be afraid to take a few risks. Surround yourself with loyal friends and people who believe in your dreams. Ultimately, motivation is key to realising your potential.
Find inspiration. Ensure that you read up on whatever it is you want to do and talk to the right people.
Get involved. Just do it! Follow through with your idea till you feel that you can’t go further, then plan B kicks in! Continue to keep at it.
Finally, give back to the community. Volunteer at a soup kitchen or at an old age home. Once you realise that you are better off than a lot of people out there, you’ll start appreciating what you have and maybe that will motivate you to work even harder!
So once the business or the project is going well and you happen to be sitting around a table with your friends or family who are talking about the good old days and how far everyone has come, before you even get a chance to comment on a statement that caused a wave of laughter around the table, you become next on the agenda. Questions start flying from all sides of the table and you’re just too chilled to answer them all. So you calmly take a sip of your drink and say… “If you want to know more, just Google me baby!”
