Where everyone has a story…
Despite having had the pleasure of working for some of the most famous women’s magazines such as Cosmopolitan, Longevity and most recently Fairlady, Ann describes books as being her biggest love…
Nestled in the culturally rich and beautiful Kalk Bay is the one and only Kalk Bay Books – a haven for all lovers of the written word. This compelling bookshop is the brainchild of Ann Donald, a woman who has many years of experience and success in the media industry under her belt.
Despite having had the pleasure of working for some of the most famous women’s magazines such as Cosmopolitan, Longevity and most recently Fairlady, Ann describes books as being her biggest love, so it was only natural that when opportunity came knocking, she ushered in Kalk Bay Books.
Having opened its doors in November 2006, shortly after Ann waved goodbye to the world of Fairlady magazine of which she was editor, the little bookshop fits perfectly into the cultural oasis that is Kalk Bay. It caters for all literary tastes, with everything from books on African history to cuisine and, of course, the Twilight saga. With such a huge offering, one is spoilt for choice. It is no surprise that the bookshop has proved to be a huge hit among tourists and locals alike, who are only puzzled as to why there has never been a bookshop in the area before.
With Kalk Bay Books established, another business opportunity has presented itself on the busy doorstep of Ann Donald. The Annex, Ann’s first restaurant, will be opening along side the bookshop sometime in March. Not only will it be a place to enjoy good food at good prices, but Ann’s vision is that it will be a cultural gathering point for all – a space where people can enjoy poetry sessions, jazz evenings, book launches and so much more. And at what better time to venture into such an exciting phase than in 2010 when many from across the globe will look to South Africa for a cultural experience no other place can offer?
